The client required a system to enable the assembly and movement of the avionics panel through various stages of its manufacturing line. They provided the "what" but relied on APE to determine the "how."
APE leveraged previous designs to create a robust and easy-to-build cart, saving engineering resources and reducing costs. Key features of the solution include:
- Robust Bearing and Roller Assembly: To ensure durability in a harsh manufacturing environment, APE designed a simple yet robust bearing and roller assembly. This allows the upper part of the cart to rotate a full 360 degrees, enabling operators to work on both sides of the panel without leaving their workstation.
- Carbon Fiber Panel Support: The avionics panel, made from carbon fiber, had an organic shape along the bottom. To support the panel without inducing stress, APE 3D-printed a shoe lined with 40 durometer rubber. This provided a perfectly aligned, soft base to prevent damage to the panel.
- Efficient Panel Installation: Simplicity was a key design principle to ensure speed and efficiency. The panel can be installed onto the cart by simply pushing four small levers. Locking Destaco clamps with safety buttons secure the panel firmly, preventing accidental release while maintaining ease of use.


APE's ability to design and build systems on short schedules enabled the client to operate efficiently and stay ahead of competitors. The resulting avionics cart is not only strong and reliable but also cost-effective and user-friendly.
