IT HAPPEN

Overview

When a global automation and robotics company embarked on developing a new medical cobot system, they sought a trusted mechanical design and build partner. Launching a new product comes with numerous challenges, and this project required extensive exploration of possibilities to devise the ideal solution.

CHALLENGE

Collaborative robots, or cobots, are increasingly becoming work assistants across various industries, including the medical lab industry. Designing a cobot workstation for medical applications necessitates creating an interface that is significantly more ergonomic and efficient than traditional industrial robots.

Solution

APE collaborated closely with the project stakeholders to understand their needs and code compliance requirements. Utilizing SolidWorks, we successfully integrated a substantial amount of equipment into a compact design, resulting in a product that was easy to deploy and could be installed through a standard office doorway.

Implementation
Results

The designed system incorporated various mechanical systems, including presence sensors, door switches, interlocks, drawers, slides, and the cobot itself. Integrating all these components, along with their respective wiring and cable routing, required expert knowledge in SolidWorks.

Our Design-Thru-Fab methodology enabled us to build a system using a combination of 3D laser-cut tubes, laser-cut plates, CNC-formed sheet metal, and numerous machined components. The final product was a seamless and sleek package that met the stringent requirements of the medical industry.

CONCLUSION

The project's outcome was a new product that, after extensive third-party testing and validation, was successfully released to the market. This innovation significantly reduces the repetitive and monotonous tasks typically performed by laboratory assistants, decreasing the likelihood of errors and increasing overall productivity.
