At APE, a common problem we address is holding something precisely where it needs to be or moving it from one position to another. This project required a combination of both functionalities within a single package. An aircraft manufacturer needed a mobile assembly station for assembling motors and installing propellers. Ergonomics was a critical aspect, requiring the system to move the motor from a vertical to a horizontal position and adjust its height to ensure worker accessibility and prevent injuries.
Leveraging our standard ground support carts as the base section, we utilized existing designs with minimal modifications. This approach saved the customer both money and valuable time. The design incorporated tab and slot details for easy fit-up and inherent quality control during the manufacturing process, following our ERASE method.
The vertical column, manufactured by Linak, operates with a battery and controller stored inside the ground support cart. The column is raised and lowered using a pendant on a flexible cord. The upper section of the unit supports the motor and allows it to be rotated 90 degrees using a gear reducer. Machined shafts rotate through bronze bushings, providing robust and maintenance-free use for years to come.

To enhance usability, we labeled similar-looking parts to distinguish between left and right and attached lanyards to the pins to prevent them from going missing. We also included a small tray to hold hardware used for attaching the motor mounts, preventing the loss of hardware and reducing foreign object debris (FOD) on the shop floor.

The customer received a powerful force multiplier for their shop floor, ensuring efficiency and safety. This solution not only met their current needs, but also provided a reliable and ergonomic system to support their operations for years to come.
